Dear friends,
Greetings from IDEA!
Our self-care for women project is really getting popular with the women we serve. These women come from various underprivileged and marginalized communities who have had very little access to education and self-improvement opportunities.
Our skill development programmes is giving them a second chance in life to make use of their potential to become financially independent and socially empowered. In their communities social problems like alcoholism, domestic violence, harassment and mistreatment of women are common. These women silently suffer blaming their fate without knowing that there is easy legal and police recourse which is their constitutional right.
We met Police officer, Ms. Deepali and requested her to conduct a session for our women to educate them about how they can take legal recourse and how police can help them when they are subjected to violence. Ms. Deepali is a law graduate and a police officer so we were happy that our women were in safe hands.
She first spoke about the problems faced by women in the country and what different types of actions can women initiate to end that on their own level first. If that fails, women can register an FIR with the police. They can avail free legal advice too. She gave them important phone numbers of women’s safety organizations that they can approach if they are scared to go through it alone.
Slowly the women opened up to her and started discussing the problems that they are facing in their homes and communities. Ms. Deepali counselled each woman and advised them regarding the course of action that they should be taking. One woman who was harassed by her in laws was very relieved to have finally shared her problems. She is in touch with madam who is guiding her further.
She also adviced women to take charge of their own selves, she said self-defence must be known to all women and we are discussing with her about how we can conduct some self-defence sessions for all our women. Self-defence is an important part of self-care. It is a woman’s right and it is our duty to ensure it.
Friends please donate to this project so that we can start self-defence sessions for women.
