Dear friends,
Greetings!
We run various skill development courses for underprivileged women and recently we conducted Awareness session on personal hygiene for a group of women from our Home Chefs and Digital Literacy courses. These hard working women are true multitaskers, managing their households, children and jobs tirelessly. But this hectic daily routine leaves them with little time for self-care so we decided to help them a little.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is an important prevention against many diseases. To create awareness about this topic, one of our volunteers, Shivani who is a budding dentist herself conducted an awareness session on oral hygiene. Amongst underprivileged people in India, there is little awareness of the importance of oral hygiene for good overall health. Many can’t afford to buy dental hygiene kits and make do with available alternatives like ash and twigs.
Shivani began with the basics of dental and oral care. She explained the importance of keeping one’s teeth and mouth clean, demonstrating the proper way to brush teeth. She showed them various products other than toothbrush and toothpaste which can be used to maintain oral hygiene like mouth wash and dental floss. She also educated the group on which foods are good for dental health and which are not. The presentation and videos were very helpful in this regard.
To promote a culture of self-care amongst women, providing them with the necessary items which they can use in their daily life is an important intervention of this project. All women who attended the session received dental hygiene kits including tooth brush, tooth paste and mouth wash.
We also had a quick word with the group about importance of hand wash, bathing and menstrual hygiene. Many young women and girls in India cannot afford sanitary pads and make do with home-made cloth napkins which can lead to infections and rashes. Knowing this, we also distributed sanitary pads along with soaps and hand sanitizers.
We thank supporters like Shivani and youself, because of whom we could provide these useful hygiene kits to our women. Please continue to support this project so that more underprivileged women can start their self-care journey!
