Remembering Chelsea's Good Work!

By Julie Hutchison | President, Co-Founder and Chelsea's Mother

Thank you for your support of this wonderful project within The Chelsea Hutchison Foundation.  Service dogs are amazing tools for those who can truly benefit. Today we have had the privilege of providing grants for 124 individuals, both children and adults.

Seizure response service dogs can be trained to the specific needs of their handlers. Some will paw a button or bark at the start of a seizure while others have the ability to sense the oncoming of one. These amazing creatures can be trained to turn their handler on their side to avoid suffocation or aspiration, stimulate and assist during a seizure to lessen the length and severity, water rescue, emergency medication retrieval, bracing a fall, protecting their handlers head, etc. etc.

With the recent National news the death of Disney’s actor Cameron Boyce to SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy), our requests for assistance with service dogs and monitoring devices has increased dramatically. While 3.4 million Americans are diagnosed with epilepsy, it is still common practice for healthcare providers to not fully disclose the risks involved, so when it hits national news, it becomes very real for this community.

Meet Eli and Cisco, one of our newest teams to receive a substantial grant. We appreciate your support and hope you continue to see the value of our programs. Thank you for making dreams come true and for saving lives of those diagnosed with life-threatening seizures.
