Movimento Bocaina Viva - Sapling Donation

Overview

During last quarter, the project focused on two goals: raising awareness about the urgent need for Atlantic Rainforest conservation and restoration, and expanding our efforts to reach additional reforested areas. Thanks to the dedication of community volunteers and local incentives, and further supported by the donations from our supporters, we have not only revitalized vital ecosystems but also inspired impactful conversations that drive action far beyond our immediate work.

Key Achievements:

Regional Awareness Campaigns

The Movimento Bocaina Viva event, developed in full integration with the community, aimed to celebrate, conserve, and restore not only the forest but also local culture and history. It became a vibrant gathering of awareness and connection.

  • Onsite Participation: More than 1,000 visitors attended cultural performances, educational workshops, thematic exhibitions and seedling distribution activities.
  • Digital Reach: The impact extended beyond the community, with over 40,000 views on Instagram (@bocaina.viva), amplifying the message of conservation and restoration to a wider audience.
  • Seedling Donation: 1,400 native seedlings to reforest and regenerate the Atlantic Rainforest; 200 fruitbearing seedlings to nourish local fauna and support surrounding communities; 420 seedlings for pots, bringing greenery and life to schools and urban spaces.

Expanded Reforested Area

  • Increased the reforested area by an additional 1 hectare, strengthening ecosystem recovery and biodiversity.

Trees Planted

  • Transferred 2,500 seedlings from the project nursery to designated reforestation areas in the Serra da Bocaina, in addition to the 2,020 seedlings distributed during the Movimento Bocaina Viva.

Educational Impact

  • 100 students participated in environmental campaigns and planting activities, integrating conservation into school curriculums.

Challenges, losses and adaptive response:

A fire of unknown reasons damaged previously restored vegetation and destroyed associated labor and material investments.

  • Immediate impacts: loss of planted saplings and groundcover, rework needed on affected plots, emotional strain on volunteers and partner communities.
  • Immediate response actions already underway: rapid site assessment, removal of charred debris where safe, prioritization of high-value micro-plots for replanting, and community meetings to coordinate prevention and watch teams.
  • Mitigation & resilience measures needed: Reinforce community fire brigades, install simple early-warning and lookout rotations during dry months, implement firebreaks and reduced-risk seasonal planting schedules, and expand insurance/contingency budget for rapid restoration after such events.

Limited reach of local and international fundraising campaigns, highlighting the need to strengthen community partnerships and diversify funding sources.

Outlook:
Looking ahead, we are committed to:

  • Expanding Restoration and Conservation Projects: Increasing the scale of reforestation in the Atlantic Rainforest, including recovery of fireaffected areas.
  • Monitoring Survival Rates of Planted Trees: Ensuring longterm success by tracking growth and resilience of seedlings.
  • Documenting Biodiversity Return: Recording the reappearance of native species as indicators of ecosystem recovery.
  • Expanding Environmental Education: Involving children directly in local activities and developing new formats of environmental education that inspire future generations.
  • Reinforcing Donation Campaigns: Strengthening local and international fundraising efforts to ensure the longterm viability of projects
