Project Report | Aug 29, 2025
Seeds of Renewal - Project report, august 2025

By Roberto Newton Carneiro | President, Instituto Biosfera - IBIOS

1. Overview

This period marked significant progress in advancing our mission to restore and protect the Atlantic Rainforest through community-led reforestation and environmental education. Activities focused on native seed collection, seedling production, awareness campaigns, and planting initiatives, directly engaging and benefiting local communities.

2. Key Achievements

Native Seed Collection

  • Conducted a successful seed collection campaign with the participation of 120 local volunteers and partnering landowners.
  • Collected over 15 kg of native Atlantic Forest seeds, including ecologically important species such as ipê and jatobá.
  • This seed stock will support future planting seasons and contribute to genetic diversity in reforested areas.

Seedling Production in Nurseries

  • Expanded nursery capacity by adding 12,000 new seedlings, now under cultivation.
  • Species selection prioritizes native trees suited to local ecosystems, ensuring high survival rates and ecological resilience.

Regional Awareness Campaigns

  • Implemented educational campaigns across 7 municipalities in the Novo Vale Consortium.
  • Reached more than 800 students, engaging public schools in symbolic planting activities that foster a sense of stewardship in younger generations.

Trees Planted

  • Transferred 5,000 seedlings from nurseries to designated reforestation areas in the Serra da Bocaina.
  • Plantings targeted degraded lands to restore habitats, stabilize soils, and protect water resources.

Direct Beneficiaries

  • 200 individuals directly involved, including community volunteers, participants in the prison system, and local collaborators.
  • Activities provided environmental knowledge, hands-on skills, and opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Educational Impact

  • 800 students participated in environmental campaigns and planting activities, integrating conservation into school curriculums.
  • Strengthened partnerships with educators to encourage ongoing environmental action.

3. Financial Summary

  • Total funds raised: USD5,000 (USD10,000 cumulative for the project to date)
  • Number of donors this period: 35 generous supporters.
  • Funds supported seed collection logistics, nursery expansion, educational material production, and reforestation site preparation.

4. Impact & Outlook

The combined efforts in seed collection, nursery production, and educational outreach are building strong foundations for large-scale ecosystem recovery. By pairing ecological action with community empowerment, we are fostering a sustainable culture of conservation.

In the next period, our focus will be on:

  • Scaling up planting operations with seedlings currently in nurseries.
  • Expanding environmental education to new municipalities.
  • Monitoring survival rates of planted trees and documenting biodiversity return.
