By Dr. Sandra Pretorius | Health in Action Program Manager
INMED South Africa has taken our Seeds for Life project from the streets of Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth to schools in the disadvantaged communities of these municipalities. Part of INMED's Health in Action program, Seeds for Life is currently focusing on supporting schools to develop and sustain food gardens.
These school vegetable gardens, based in the communities in which learners live, provide access to snutritious food in order to thrive. The Health in Action team offers schools in low-resource communities training and support they need to develop or improve their food gardens. This is vital for learners’ nutrition and food security, and the gardens are interactive "living classrooms," which teachers and the Health in Action Break-time Buddies use as the basis for lessons, as well harvesting produce from these gardens to supplement the meals at the schools.
Health in Action is a school-based, participatory education program that promotes nutrition and healthy lifestyles through classroom education, school gardens and physical exercise during break time. Over the past five years, Health in Action has improved the lives of more than 116,000 children, who become change agents in their families and communities by sharing the lessons they've learned and skills they have developed to build their own gardens at home.
