Seeding Futures is an accredited 15-week program that teaches permaculture design to unemployed youth, equipping them with the skills to grow their personal, household and neighbourhood resilience and connects them to work in the local green economy.
Youth employment is arguably the greatest challenge facing South Africa with 60.2% of young people unable to find work. There are about 400 000 unemployed youth in the Cape Flats, outside of Cape Town. 69% of youth from low income neighbourhoods live below the food poverty line. COVID-19 and the Economic lockdown have exacerbated hunger and unemployment through job losses and, now, rising energy, food and water prices. This has increased the demand for our resilience training.
We equip 100 unemployed youth per year with the knowledge and hands-on skills of designing and implementing permaculture design, which can then be applied to homes, lives and projects. This grows their confidence as well as the resilience of Mitchells Plain. Through job shadows we connect graduates to livelihood opportunities in the local green economy.
This program aims to graduate 300 young people over three years with rigorous Monitoring & Evaluation that catches where the magic happens and poises us for growth. Our aims are for national reach - so that the young people of South Africa might be equipped to look after themselves in the face of climate change.
