Donis, 28 years old, is a respected local leader and head farmer for the SEPALI Madagascar agroforestry site in his Makira Natural Park-bordering community. The tree nursery that Donis established together with 14 of his peers has produced 10,000 young trees.
Donis’ father, now retired, was one of the first CPALI-trained wild silk farmers in northeastern Madagascar.
In addition to immediate compensation for tending the nursery and planting trees, Donis and the other farmers in his circle will earn future income from raffia fibers, native dye plants, and wild silk cocoons to help keep their children in school.
Donis is one of four local leaders and 60 collaborating farmers who are tree planting together with our initiative in their protected area-proximate agroforestry systems this year. His dedication is an inspiration to our team, and we're proud to share his story.
