Challenge

In Siaya County, Kenya, widows and orphans face widespread disinheritance due to deeply ingrained cultural practices and systemic issues. This leaves them vulnerable to poverty, exploitation, and homelessness. Denied access to land, livestock, and other assets, they lose their homes, livelihoods, and food security. Women, who make up the majority of subsistence farmers, are particularly affected, struggling to provide for themselves and their children.

Solution

Sensitize communities on the rights of widows and orphans through radio sessions, community forums, and collaborations with religious organizations. Establish and train community paralegal officers and estate administrators to handle inheritance cases and prevent future disinheritance. Pro Bono Legal Network: Create a team of 15 pro-bono lawyers to provide legal assistance to victims of property disinheritance. Property Restoration: Restore property ownership to 100 widows and child-headed

Long-Term Impact

The project's long-term impact will be the transformation of community attitudes and mindsets regarding the inheritance rights of widows and orphans in Siaya County, Kenya. By promoting a more just and equitable approach to property inheritance, the project aims to create a lasting solution that reduces disinheritance cases and empowers widows and orphans to secure their rightful inheritance and break the cycle of poverty
