To address the prevalent issue of widows and orphans being disinherited in Siaya County, CIAG-K proposes a project aimed at restoring their Land and property rights. The project will focus on establishing a team of 9 pro-bono lawyers to provide legal assistance and restoring property ownership to 100 widows and child-headed households.
In Siaya County, Kenya, widows and orphans face widespread disinheritance due to deeply ingrained cultural practices and systemic issues. This leaves them vulnerable to poverty, exploitation, and homelessness. Denied access to land, livestock, and other assets, they lose their homes, livelihoods, and food security. Women, who make up the majority of subsistence farmers, are particularly affected, struggling to provide for themselves and their children.
Sensitize communities on the rights of widows and orphans through radio sessions, community forums, and collaborations with religious organizations. Establish and train community paralegal officers and estate administrators to handle inheritance cases and prevent future disinheritance. Pro Bono Legal Network: Create a team of 15 pro-bono lawyers to provide legal assistance to victims of property disinheritance.
