Giving life to sea walls

By shayle havemann | Project leader

This project focuses on the installation of 100 specialized habitat panels in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. This high-traffic area serves as a global stage for marine conservation. Each $550 panel provides a home for indigenous South African species, creating a vertical reef in the Atlantic Ocean. This is a landmark collaboration between local stakeholders and global experts.

The solution is a nature-based retrofit. We are installing 100 habitat panels designed to mimic the natural rocky shores of the Cape. In partnership with V&A, 2 Oceans Aquarium & Rhodes University, we will conduct rigorous scientific research to monitor the return of marine life. This project turns a functional wall into a living laboratory and a public gallery. The panels provide the physical complexity needed for seaweed, fish, and invertebrates to colonize and thrive in the heart of the city.
