Let's start! - Sea Turtle season is here!

By Zoraida Tenorio | Project coordinator

Last June 8th, we launched the Sea Turtle Conservation Program 2024 season at Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge, at Costa Rica´s Central Pacific. This program aims to protect and preserve sea turtle populations and raise environmental awareness among the local community and visitors.

The start of the sea turtle program at Punta Mala Refuge has been promising, with a dedicated team and positive initial results. With the support of our first volunteers and the collaboration of the community, we have already made significant progress. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our conservation and environmental awareness efforts in the coming months.

In this month, we welcomed our first volunteers, with whom we conducted a training session on this species and safe handling protocols. They are also assisting us in preparing all the details to ensure a successful season. Additionally, we were greatly supported by a group of 14 volunteers who helped us in rebuilding nursery barriers, labeling, and marking, among other tasks. We are truly grateful for their support.

We have started the night patrols on the beach to identify turtle nests and collect data on their location, size, and condition.

We already have 24 volunteers registered who will soon join hands to help us protect this important species.

The foundation's long and dedicated support to the Refuge supports not only the monitoring aspect of the season but also the collection of data regarding all aspects of the natural environment, maintenance of the Refuge's infrastructure, and expanding awareness of the invaluable work that is done here at the Playa Hermosa Punta Mala Wildlife Refuge.

This vital work would not be possible without your continued support and dedication.

With tremendous gratitude, we will send you regular updates throughout the season so you can keep updated with the latest findings. In the meantime, we invite you to share this project with your friends and family, and keep supporting our efforts!

Thank you so much!
