We improve the quality of education in the poorest East African primary school communities by making and distributing SeatPacks: Solar school bag units that turn into mobile bamboo classroom furniture for sitting and studying indoors or outdoors, with inbuilt solar lamp kits for study after dark, bringing green energy lighting in the home as reward for educating the households children. A SeatPack serves a child aged 6 to 18 years daily over a minimum of 5-years.
In East Africa, over 10 million rural/refugee children aged 6 to 15 years study in neglected classrooms lacking both furniture and electricity (due to the high cost of wooden furniture averaging $100 each, with 1% of schools connected to the power grid in Uganda alone). These factors greatly discourage school completion, negatively affecting learning at school and at home, limiting future earning opportunities for for both boys and girls alike.
Zetu Foundation delivers SeatPacks to children in neglected classrooms (lacking furniture at school and electricity at home). SeatPacks are Solar powered school bags that turn into bamboo classroom chairs with writing surfaces during lessons at school, and a rechargeable solar lighting kit for continued studying after sunset at home. SeatPack supports rural / refugee children aged 6 to 15 years for up to 5 years of daily use, with a menstrual storage toolkit inside for adolescent girls.
By 2030, SeatPacks will support 1 million rural / refugee children in neglected classrooms by aiding basic sitting and writing at school, and solar lighting for continued studying after dark at home. As an outcome, we save over half a million trees by replacing wooden desks with bamboo chairs, support menstrual hygiene for half a million adolescent girls, and enable 1 million children to study after dark for improved educational outcomes in the poorest communities of Sub-Saharan Africa.
