We would like to use this month's report to draw your attention to the latest events in Haiti.
The situation there has worsened in recent weeks: when Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry traveled to Kenya at the end of February to seal an agreement on the deployment of a multinational security force to the Caribbean country, gang crime intensified. The forced closure of the airport prevented Ariel Henry from returning (BBC). At the end of April, he finally bowed to pressure and officially resigned as head of government (Deutsche Welle).
It is now up to a transitional council to navigate the citizens of Haiti out of the state and security crisis. Whether the transitional council will be able to assert its own authority against the ruling gangs is still uncertain. There are still doubts as to whether the members of the council will be able to push through new elections, coordinate the troops to support the police and arrange for the ports to be opened in order to guarantee food supplies again as quickly as possible. Food prices within the capital have now risen fivefold, prompting many families to flee to Nicaragua. Those who flee and try to escape from Port-au-Prince to one of the overcrowded refugee camps outside run the risk of being kidnapped by criminals.
The schools that Pen Paper Peace is supporting in Port-au-Prince are trying to reopen in compliance with all safety precautions. So far, some teachers have been in contact with families via WhatsApp to send them assignments for the children. As always, our local partners depend on donations.
A new government has been formed in Haiti within the last few days giving rise to some (admittedly modest) hope (BBC).
Much remains - but hopefully it represents a turning point in Haiti's current situation.
