School Support for 130 orphan children-Addis Ababa

This is the project report of Yengat Birhan Charity Organization on school support for 130 orphan children from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Report period from May – August, 2023

Introduction

Yengat Birhan Charity organization is an indigenous humanitarian organization that works on children education, women empowerment and health since 2016.

On the reporting period, the organization performed different activities under the school support project for the 130 (65 female and 65 male) school children. For all 130 school children we were providing tutorial class three days a week, stationary materials, school bag, clothing, sanitary pad for female students, ethics class once a week with snack as the plan. As you know because of the budget constraint’s we forced to provide some types of support only for 85 sponsored children, like hair oil, laundry soap and annual retire.

In general, we provide the following support for all 130 school children in this reporting period:

ü  Tutorial class, it was given by the government school and we covered the tutorial fee regularly.

ü  The students were eating lentil and potato sandwiches, egg sandwiches, with milk and tea alternatively unless they refused to take because of fasting reason during ethics class and mentoring.

ü  Summer program, the summer program was running smoothly. There are numerous games being played.  English and math tutoring for students is provided by volunteers that came from many international schools and we assigned them to teach English or Math’s according to their grade certificated point. 

ü  Award celebration, we provided different school materials for scorer according with their average points, in general for 17 students, for those whose have got average 80 and above 80. During the event we used: soft drink, Kukis, and Cake for all students with all staff of Yenigat Brihan organization.

ü  Students had a good annual trip time at Addis Abeba in the unity park. They had beautiful time by played different games, observed different kinds of wild animals including Lion and a good lunch was served and they were very happy and grateful.

ü  We provided both sportswear and shoes for 24 male students and now the students regularly doing sport training every Saturday in the afternoon at Biruh Tesfa school. We will provide it for girls’ students too if we gate budget.

ü  We purchased different food items like milk powder, peanut butter, fruit Jam for 4 different students, who needs additional support and we keep buying some food items weekly and paying electricity bills regularly for two students.

As you know we were providing tutorial class for all our children but their last year (2022/23) performance was not satisfactory especially grade 8.  Some of the identified problem for the poor performance of the students especially for grade 8 students in school year 2022/23 are the following: -

• Text Book was not available timely for the students
• The new curriculum, which introduced in the year gave them challenge
• Teachers were also new for some new subject, which expected to teach as additionally.
• Passing point for grade 8 was 50 unlike last year which was 39.  
• Less student’s effort that may be related with their different challenging life situation  

From their report card, it is clear that the students put in less effort in addition to all the above-mentioned points together with inefficient tutorials offered, which contributed to their incompetence, because of this we decided to provide tutorial support under Yengat Birhan Charity by hiring teachers and by renting additional class room in order to contribute on their tomorrow’s life.
