Methods of teaching in Agragamee School encourage creative expression in children. These are first generation school children, who have never been exposed to print or written language in their village or community and get no support for school learning at home. Agragamee School feels a great sense of satisfaction, that these children from some of the poorest communities in India are able to write short stories, essays, and reports, with illustrations as early as Class III. They share their writings with each other, edit them, and produce a newsletter ‘Dangar Katha’, as also write the Annual Report for their school. Parents also love the school, as their daughters come home singing school songs, and even teach their older siblings at home. ‘I have travelled all over Rayagada District, there is no other school like Agragamee School’, is a certificate from a happy parent which we treasure.
A school bus has helped to increase children’s attendance, and also enabled children from villages up to 15kms away benefit from Agragamee School's teaching methods. In this report, we bring to you a story by Shanti of Class V, translated from Odiya. Shanti is the daughter of a potter, and the youngest of three siblings. Her brothers study in the Government School in the village. Even though she is the youngest, with the inputs from Agragamee School she is able to help her brothers with their studies, and even teaches her mother to read and write. We hope you will enjoy reading this story which underlines the ability of good education to draw out the natural talent in children.
Story of Three Friends
By: Shanti, Class: V,
In a village, a man and a monkey lived together. One day, they decided to go on a tour to see different places of interest. On their way they saw a rabbit. The rabbit asked, “Hey, monkey and human, where are you going?” The monkey said they were going on a tour to see places of interest. The rabbit told them that he had no friends, and felt very lonely. The monkey suggested that the rabbit become friends with them. The rabbit said “How can we be friends, I live in the forest, and you live in the jungle?” The monkey replied “ you can stay with us in our house in the village”. The rabbit agreed and joined them. On their way they saw a pond. The monkey suggested that they all should bath in that beautiful pond. Then all of them jumped in and had a wonderful bath, and went back home. Another day they went on a visit and found a big temple on their way. The priest of the temple had a coconut . The monkey took away that coconut. They shared the coconut between them, and went home
On reaching home they saw a tiger had entered their house. They demanded to know why he had entered their house! The tiger said ‘I am going right away’, and he immediately left. Then, the three friends swept and cleaned their house, and lived happily ever after.
