Project Report | Oct 29, 2015
Social Misfit or Scholastic Achiever

By Karen Sparacio | Project Leader

Joel
Joel
My name is Joel.  I am 17 years old.  I come from Gulu in northern Uganda. I now live in Kampala with my parents but the situation at home is not really good. My parents did not go far with their studies and now we are suffering because they can't get a job that can support me and my brothers and sisters in school.
I am in secondary school at the S3 level.  I am thankful that I am attending boarding school because I can dedicate myself to my studies.  There is always enough time for me to read books and I am free from the family problems which persist.  In school, I meet different people from different backgrounds from all corners of Uganda.
My proudest accomplishment is when I managed to excel in the primary leaving examination.  This made it possible for me to be accepted into a competitve secondary school.
The toughest challenges always come when I lack all of the necessary school requirements and when the weather changes and it rains too much, making me reach late to school.
I overcome most of these challenges by following the advise of the elderly people that help me to grow as a good person.
If I wasn't at school, I would be a social misfit in the community.
I am of strong hope of becoming a doctor.  I am working tooth and nail for it.  This is important to me because I want to help people who are poor and can not get enough money for healthcare.
Just $10 provides rquirements for a student.  $100 provides tuition for one term.
This holiday season, give children like Joel, the gift of education.  The gift to dream.  The gift of a future.
