"My life would have been so terrible if I was not in school. Many children in the Acholi Quarters who do not have the chance to go to school, have to work at the stone quarry the whole day, I would not be an exception," Benard solemnly says.
Benard is one of 97 children who has the opportunity to attend school through the efforts of Project Have Hope and through your support. And we do mean opportunity. In Uganda, particularly for a child who lives in a slum and was born into a family, a life, as a displaced refugee, an education is not taken for granted.
Before we enrolled Benard into school, he would spend more than 10 hours each day laboring in the stone quarry beside his aunt. Now he is consistently top in his class. "My proudest accomplishment is being able to excel in exams and in most cases I am top in my class, which has made me win praises from my teachers and the school at large," Benard proudly acknowlegdes. "Most importantly, the respect and fame that I have gained through my excellent performance at school, would not be there, not even the good English that I now speak."
Benard reflects on his future, a future which would be very different without an education. "My hopes are that I will one day become an engineer. I will definitely have to work hard to achieve this. This is important to me because the few times I travel to my village, the roads there are so terrible that I feel we possibly do not have people with this knowledge. I need to acquire this so that it will be of help to my people."
Children, like Benard, were born into their circumstances of poverty, displacement, and futures as hard laborers. We are changing that. You can help. Just $10 provides rquirements for a student. $100 provides tuition for one term. Consider giving the gift, the opportunity, of education to a child who would not otherwise have it.
