Fall 2024 - College Access Report from SLI

By Christopher Clymer Kurtz | Director of Development

With your support, Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) is empowering 70 current scholars and 130 alumni, many of whom are featured at vasli.org/somos. They are part of a rising generation of greatly needed, highly skilled contributors to society who will serve our communities through careers in healthcare, business, law, education, technology, foreign affairs, engineering, and other fields.

SLI programming continues to make a positive impact on students. As Rosely (John Handley High School ’22, George Mason University ’26, computer science) shared recently, “With its numerous academic resources and events, SLI played a significant role in preparing me for college. My mentor guided me through social and educational challenges and set my expectations for the college experience. She was one of my biggest supporters, and she empowered me through the midst of COVID. In the classroom, SLI helped me develop strong study skills and habits that I still use. Volunteer opportunities showed me the value of engaging in community efforts outside the classroom. Furthermore, the strong network of peers and mentors gave me a group to rely upon and boosted my confidence in my academic abilities as I pursued a higher education.”

Since SLI’s founding in 2012, its alumni have attended 25 colleges and universities, fueled by the generosity of the SLI community (including you!) which has enabled it to provide nearly $700,000 in SLI college scholarships, technology grants, and college dual enrollment and AP course tuition assistance.

SLI’s impact through these awards is growing at a rapid pace: More than $300,000, or 43 percent of SLI’s all-time total support for students, was awarded to students in the last two years alone, and next year SLI's largest ever cohort will graduate from high school and begin college. For 2025 alone SLI is budgeting more than a quarter million dollars for financial assistance!

Thank you for your support!
