College Access for Latinx Students

By Christopher Clymer Kurtz | Director of Development

College and Career Access Day
College and Career Access Day

It's an exciting time for SLI, thanks to the many people (you!) who are making possible SLI's mission: to support Latino/a/x high school students with college access through rigorous academic challenge, leadership development, scholarships, and supportive mentorships.

...On December 2nd, the 40 high school students attending the annual James Madison University Professors in Residence (PIR) and Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) College and Career Access Day at JMU experienced a new event feature this year: Local Sentara Health professionals sharing their expertise in promoting salud y comunidad, or health and community.

...The SLI website now features new interviews with SLI scholars who are now in college. Irais is pursuing degrees in political science and Spanish with a minor in pre-law, and Guadalupe is pursuing an engineering degree, and is the driver for her university's Super-Mileage Car club.

...During SLI's year-end campaign, donations are doubled, thanks to $43,000 in matching funds from the SLI Founder's Fund, the Open Hearts Foundation, and anonymous donors.

...We're ending the year strong, for even greater impact in 2024. Since 2012 SLI has served 181 scholars (68 current and 113 alumni, who have attended 24 colleges and universities) and awarded more than $542,000 in financial support for students, including:

  • $425,745 in college scholarship awards to attend two- and four-year institutions. Named scholarships such as the F&M Bank SLI Scholar College Award and the Sentara SLI Scholar College Award support SLI scholars pursuing relevant fields of study.
  • $89,445 in computer awards to help eligible SLI scholars purchase the technology they need to start college.
  • $27,801 in tuition assistance for scholars taking dual enrollment college and AP courses while in high school. These improve college readiness, enhance academic portfolios, and may reduce the number of credit hours needed in college.

Thank you for supporting SLI!
