This winter, the Scholars Latino Initiative (SLI) -- with the support of generous donors -- is continuing to create college opportunities for Latino students, offering them rigorous academic challenge, leadership development, supportive mentorships and scholarship awards.
SLI currently serves 69 students in Harrisonburg, Richmond and Winchester, Virginia.
Noel, a SLI scholar at Harrisonburg High School, said that SLI has helped him prepare for college and increased his academic focus: “It’s about trying as hard as I can,” he said.
Another scholar, Flory (pictured), recently expressed her desire to create change: “I want to be very involved with the community,” she said. “That’s something that can impact a lot of people. I can start locally, and then – the dream would be to one day help in policymaking or the US government, and change systems.”
And SLI alum Emily recently reflected about her first semester in college this fall, writing this: "I've learned a lot about myself and my capabilities."
I don't know all of the stories behind donors' compassion for SLI scholars, but I hope that you know that SLI's impact is your impact, too -- and that your gifts are very, very appreciated.
