This year we received support from the Salvadoran Water Authority (https://www.asa.gob.sv/) to provide funding for our turtle conservation project in Barra de Santiago. The grant provided salaries to hire 50 local fishermen and employ three biologists to supervise and document the project. Materials were purchased to construct turtle hatcheries at three locations up and down the beach for this 6 month project from August 2024 – February 2025. The team will also clean around the nearby estuary.
We began on August 12 , 2024. The 50 fishermen first took a class on their job responsibilities which included helping construct three turtle hatcheries in different locations, patrolling the beach in search of nests and gathering the eggs to be transported to the closest hatchery for protection.
See the pictures of construction and pictures of Ruben, Manager of the La Palapa location in front of the new construction. Two egg clutches have already been buried here of 170 eggs, and the first baby turtles are expected to hatch September 26 and October 3, 2024. The turtle hatchery at La Palapa can protect up to 200 expected nests.
We are thrilled with the support of ASA and job creation in this rural community while spreading knowledge of turtle conservation. We still need donations to help pay expenses for many who are volunteering on this project and many thanks to all the GlobalGiving donors!!!
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
