Nesting Season has Begun!

By David Rivard | Project Manager

Treasures from the Tides

Turtle season starts in August and is over by February, so the project has been dormant for six months, howerver it has started up again for 2022!

A mother turtle, approximately 90 lbs, layed 102 eggs on the beach at La Palapa in Barra de Santiago on August 24, 2022.

Reuben Navarro (our Project Manager) was right there to care for her and gently lifted the eggls to our protection facility on the property and marked the spot.

The eggs take 45 days to hatch and we are estimating that the baby turtles will hatch and be ready for release on October 8, 2022. Sadly, only 1 in 1000 baby turtles make it to adulthood so this conservation program is important in the community.

This project encourages local fisherman to collect the eggs giving them an incentive rather than selliing the eggs to restaurants, and supports conservation of the sea turtle population.

More turtles have layed eggs too and we are driving out today to document and record when the baby turtles will be released. We give them the best chance by protecting the eggs from predators and releasng the little ones to go back into the sea at sunset, giving them more protecton.  Any of you who have supported this project are invited to come and be part of this event.
