Saving Sloths Together receives injured sloths and orphans too young to survive in the wild. Although we had been caring for rescued sloths for years, the SST program was started to improve our release capabilities, especially for rescued baby sloths. Sloths are rescued for various reasons. Typical incidents include electrocution from power lines, car accidents, dog attacks, and human encroachment, such as deforestation and the illegal pet trade. Often, baby sloths suffer from injuries and the loss of their mother from such incidents.
Our veterinary and wildlife rehabilitation teams provide everything from emergency treatment and diagnostics to proper nutrition, recovery, and ongoing monitoring. As they heal, each animal enters a carefully managed rehabilitation process focused on rebuilding the natural behaviors, strength, and independence they need to survive in the wild. When a sloth is ready, our team carefully evaluates its health, behavior, and ability to thrive independently before preparing it for release.
