One Heart World-Wide’s achievements in Dolpa so far:
Setting up birthing centers: One Heart World-Wide started working in Dolpa at the end of 2011. Since then, we have equipped and trained the staff of one birthing center in Dunai, which has already served over 85 deliveries since opening up. Some families travel upward to two days to allow their mothers to attend the birthing center. Plans are now under way to set up four additional birthing centers (this will start to happen this summer, when the weather conditions are more favorable to construction). A total of 3 skilled births attendants have just graduated from our most recent training to help staff our future centers.
Community outreach program: Four master trainers have been trained and 81 community outreach providers were trained. After training each community outreach provider return to their community and start implement a community outreach program to increase access to care for pregnant women and newborn infants (skilled attendance at birth is the single most important factor in maternal mortality reduction). In addition, 30 political leaders were sensitized to the issues relevant to maternal and neonatal health. Since the start of our operations, over 300 pregnant women have benefited from our outreach program and among these women the percent of skilled attendance at birth has raised to over 75% from a baseline to less of 5%.
