Oregon’s freshwater turtle, the western pond turtle, is identified as a priority at risk species in the Oregon Conservation Strategy (OCS), Oregon’s Wildlife Action Plan and statewide framework for conserving fish and wildlife species (ODFW 2006). In efforts to recover this endangered species, the Oregon Zoo is home to the Western Pond Turtle Head Start program. Located in the new Education Center there are currently 18 turtles thriving at the zoo. The turtles are continuing to grow with the largest hatchling weighing in at 48g and the smallest at 11g. This spring, in late May or early June they will be released to the Sondino Pond Sites in Washington. To date, the zoo has released 751 western pond turtles in the wild.
Thank you to our GlobalGiving donors for your help in ensuring the success of this recovery effort!
