Saving 20,000 Endangered Frankincense in Somalia

While fundraising for our frankincense project continues gradually, community volunteers in the Cal Miskaat mountains have been moving forward with small, inkind actions that cost little but matter greatly.

In recent weeks, local elders and harvesters in Ufeyn district:

• Mapped 250 vulnerable frankincense trees threatened by overtapping and parasitic plants, using notebooks and a shared mobile phone for basic location notes.
• Removed harmful parasitic plants from 20 trees using simple hand tools already owned by the volunteers.

One elder reflected:

“We protect these trees because they are our future. Every small action adds up.”

We continue to refine the Sustainable Harvesting Guide through community dialogues. These inkind efforts show what is possible even before full funding is in place. When resources allow, we will scale up to reach all 350 custodians with formal training.
