Thanks to your support, over the past 3 months 965 turtle hatchlings ahve been released at three beaches in Nicaragua. All were raised at our nursery at Coco Beach, though the majority of nests were protected by our community rangers at the remote Brasilon beach. They are moved to keep the nests safe from poachers. The majority of the species protected were Galapagos Green Turtles, though some were Olive-Ridley Turtles.
We have started to invite the public to participate in the turtle releases and this gives us an opportunity to educate the public about good-stewardship practices. This includes keeping lights dimmed on the beaches at night, keeping dogs and vehicles off the beaches.
Your support also helped us to improve the beach nesting habitat through trash removal. We conducted a beach clean-up with the help of 6 adults, 19 college students and 9 children. They removed an estimated 140 pounds of trash from these beaches.
Finally, ten youth who are part of our mentorship program have been helping the women rangers at the turtle nursery to monitor nests. They are learning valuable skills that could provide job opportunities in conservation and tourism.
