A new transmitter for the investEGGator

The investEGGator with new tracker
The investEGGator with new tracker

Dear turtle friend,

Thank you for supporting our sea turtle conservation efforts and also the InvestEGGator technology.

Last year we sent the investEGGAtor to the Caribbean and South American for deployment to thwart the illegal traffic of sea turtle eggs. After receiving feedback on the functionality of the investEGGAtor, we decided to focus some energy on testing out new transmitters that could connect with open wi-fi networks. This would enable additional detections of the eggs during transit by wildlife traffickers. Also, the new transmitter we have adapted for the egg is expected to have a longer battery life!

We are excited to share that a new batch of eggs went out to be received by partners in the Caribbean. We look forward to reporting how these eggs work in the field. We are unable to share the name of the country in order to protect the safety of personnel at the partner organizatoin.

Your support for this campaign als strengthened our sea turtle conservatione efforts on beaches in southwestern Nicaragua. At beaches and in two hatcheries, we have protected over 3000 endangered Galapagos green turtles, and have also protected several critically endangered hawksbill and leatherback turtles. Thank you for making this possible.

In early December, we were faced with a mystery because a nocturnal animal was repeatedly entering the hatchery and stealing eggs. We reinforced the hatchery, digging a metal barrier deep into the sand and kept watch after dusk. It turned out to be a skunk that was entering the hatchery. The hatchery is now reinforced. We hope that the skunk has found a different source of food other than baby turtles!

Finally, we are excited to announce that we have a new sea turtle hatchery under construction in Eastern El Salvador. We are grateful to have the opportunity to help sea turtles in new locations.

Thank you for helping us to improve the investEGGator technology and to help us protect nesting sea turtles across Central America!

Warm regards,

Sarah
