Save San Luis Forest, Save This Family, Costa Rica

There isn't much to report on this project, although we have received two fairly large donations in the past month. The Monge family is trying to put their lives together since losing their beloved son, Josue in September. The forest is continuing to sequester CO2 from our Earth's atmosphere yet the family who is conserving it receives no income from these 12 hectares of tropical rainforest. In fact it is responsible for removing approximately 180 metric tons of CO2 annually. How many metric tons are you and your family or business responsible for emitting? Only $600 is needed to finish the funding for this project that will ensure that the 12 hectares (about 26 acres) of lakeside forest and the abundant life within it will be preserved. It’s of vital importance to save this tract of forest from the development that has been prevalent in this area. The myriad of animals who thrive there depend upon it.

If you read the first report on this project you know that the Monge family who own the land have been hard hit by personal loss. Without the funding for this project they may well be driven to other methods of securing income from their land such as selling off portions for development or cutting down mature trees for their enormous commercial value. We have received one large donation to this project bringing the funding goal down to only $884.00 at this time.

On August 28 and 29th the community of San Luis held a weekend fundraiser to help the Monge family with their situation. Used clothing, food and drinks were served. They held a bicycle race as well. The event raised almost $300.

September 16, less than one month later their son Josue passed away. His presence in our world was for his mother, Alba. Because of her relentless determination to care for him she was able, last year, to overcome terminal cancer (5 tumors) and return to her original healthy self.
