20 Years of Caring sums up exactly what Hlokomela is all about, although one should add grace, tenacity, empathy and resilience. On 27 June 2025 Hlokomela (Hoedspruit Training Trust) celebrated its 20th anniversary at the Radisson Safari Hotel in Hoedspruit, Limpopo. Donors, stakeholders, partners, friends and family joined Hlokomela to celebrate two decades of caring for the Hoedspruit and surrounding communities. It is thanks to donors and friends, such as our GlobalGiving family, that we are able to reach this milestone and still continue to grow by adding more health care services for beneficiaries.
Spinal health care soon to be offered at Hlokomela
Hlokomela recently signed off on a new, exciting collaboration with World Spine Care, World Spine Care Africa, Chiropractic Association of South Africa and South African Spine Society to open a spine care clinic at Hlokomela Blyde Clinic.
The focus will be to provide education, exercise and spinal manipulative therapy in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal care for lower back pain, cervical spine pain and pain affecting activities of daily living.
Primary eye care now available
Hoedspruit Optometrist has teamed up with Hlokomela to offer affordable primary eye care services at Blyde Clinic.
Jonathan Mundell is the optometrist assisting with various primary eye care services from basic eye test to prescribing and making glasses.
Celebrating Nurses Day on 12 May 2025
We celebrated all our wonderful nurses for their dedication, compassion and hard work. They are truly the heart of our clinic. Rotary Club, Bavaria Fruit Estate, Kapama, BJ Blyde, Thornybush and more members of our community contributed towards snacks and small tokens of appreciation for the nursing staff.
Tshemba Foundation medical volunteers
From April until June we welcomed wonderful Tshemba volunteres from a pelvic physiotherapist to doctors who assist in our women’s clinic with ultrasounds and other women’s health concerns. General Practitioners also volunteered at our facility to attend to patients.
Mommies Support Group
We had a few Mommies Support group visits this quarter, including a certified lactation consultant who spoke to mothers regarding breastfeeding.
We also had Dr Maile, a Paediatrician from Baby Steps talk about practical tips and advice on preventative measure parents can take at home before going to the emergency room.
International visitors at Hlokomela
On 9 June 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting Prof Joshua Rosenberger (Penn State University) and 11 undergraduate students from the Global Health Minor program. What a special day of learning, sharing, and connection!
We showcased the work we do at Hlokomela through a full day of activities — from our primary health care services to our mobile clinics, farmworker wellness programs, and community outreach projects.
We ended the day with a deeply relaxing TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) session — a beautiful way to reflect and release.
