National Parks are among the last refuges for many species on the brink of being lost from the UK. From nightingales to butterflies, puffins to beavers, we must act now to save these cherished species from dwindling into extinction. We are the only charity which has the connections, evidence and expertise to convince the government in England and Wales that to save British wildlife, National Parks must become places where species can recover, thrive and spread more widely. Internationally, governments have committed to ensuring that 30% of land and sea is managed for nature. But only 6% of National Park land in England and Wales is managed effectively, and little of the sea is protected. Rare species still call National Parks home, but their numbers are declining. The cuckoo, hen harrier and nightingales can be found in all National Parks. Across the UK, nightingale numbers have fallen by 50%, cuckoos by 65% and there are only 545 breeding pairs of hen harriers.
In 2025, we need to make the most of these opportunities: the UK government has promised to reform the laws governing Parks in England, Welsh government are creating a new National Park and we're leading work for National Marine Parks. We are the only charity which has the connections, evidence and expertise to convince the government in England and Wales that to save British wildlife, National Parks must become places where species can recover, thrive and spread more widely.
As the only charity representing the interests of all National Parks in England and Wales, we monitor and research the state of nature to track improvements or declines. As we continue to fight for National Parks, work with decision-makers and build a growing community of Park protectors, we will be able to measure positive change for nature, including species at risk. We share our findings widely as we call for change and work closely with individual National Parks.
