Every night, people experiencing homelessness face an impossible choice: stay with their pet or find shelter alone. This project helps people and their pets access safe accommodation, essential support and a pathway off the streets, because no one should have to choose between a home and the companion that keeps them going.
Homelessness is on the rise in the UK. Recent figures show that rough sleeping in England reached a record high last autumn. 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing homelessness have a pet who provide comfort, safety and emotional support. Many accommodation services cannot accept animals, forcing people to remain on the streets rather than give up their companion. Both people and pets are exposed to incredibly dangerous conditions, making it harder to access support and rebuild their lives.
St Mungo's is one of the few organisations that welcomes pets, removing a critical barrier that prevents many people from accessing support. This project will provide safe, pet-friendly accommodation alongside essential services, including food, veterinary care and tailored support. By keeping people and their pets together, it offers a practical pathway off the streets and helps individuals rebuild their lives in safety.
By enabling people and their pets to access safe housing, this project will help break the cycle of homelessness for some of the most vulnerable individuals. Over time, it will improve physical and mental wellbeing, increase engagement with our support services and lead to more people securing long-term accommodation.
