Dear friends of the Golden Eagle,
We have very exciting news for this report.
Nima has become a healthy juvenile!
Remember we were monitoring a Golden Eagle family in the state of Zacatecas? Well, on its 10th week of life, Nima successfully flied away after a long training process that was captured by the camera. Good news is that this year we did install a satellite transmitter therefore we can track almost daily its movements.
This year we noticed the varied diet of the chick. The diet included black vultures, rodents, snakes and even a fox! Scientists are currently analyzing all this data as well as the parental behavior of the chicks to understand better and prioritize conservation efforts. Without the support of the local community that owns the land where we installed the camera this would have never been possible. Once Nima flew away, we have removed the camera of the nest to reduce the impact on the following nesting seasons.
Next steps
We are currently working with two communication agencies, Grey Mexico and Flock, towards creating new awareness campaigns for protection of the species. We are also expecting a Nat Geo program and article to be published next January 2018 and just a few days ago a popular domestic channel called Canal Once broadcasted our videos with the intention of increasing awareness of the threats that the species faces in Mexico due to habitat-loss and human pressures.
The rest of the year will be working closely with our partners to preserve the habitat of Nima and other eagles of the region and following their movements to increase the scientific knowledge in Mexico.
Join us and help us preserve our national living symbol!
