Dear Golden Eagle friends,
These past four months we have been collaborating with our field allies to continue the monitoring activities of key habitat grasslands as well as the nests of our Golden Eagle population. Through the efforts of Espacios Naturales y Desarrollo Sustentable (ENDESU), grassland restoration activities have been undertaken in the states of Coahuila and Zacatecas in northern Mexico. These activities have included identification and restoration of watering holes for local fauna, as well as capacity building workshops to sensitize local communities to the threats and key management strategies for the Golden Eagle population.
With regards to the nest monitoring, daily observations have been conducted in the five priority regions for the Golden Eagle population in Mexico. These daily monitoring activities have included sightings of other key species, including hares, coyotes, rabbits, prairie dog and other key bird species.
Finally, during the last week of March, the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature hosted the second meeting of the Golden Eagle experts. During this event two main points were discussed: 1) the idea to formalize this group to be The Golden Eagle Advisory Committee in Mexico, and 2) to review the project´s outcomes after its first year in operation to determine best next steps. Some of the key agreements of this meeting were to review and refresh the concept document for the project, and to identify additional resources for communication activities. The next meeting is proposed to take place in June, 2014.
We thank everyone who has contributed to make this conservation project possible through Global Giving donations. It is thanks to you that every day, more of these magnificent animals can find a healthy and safe environment in which to thrive. We hope you continue being part of it.
All the best,
Save the Golden Eagle Project Team
