Golden eagle update and plans

(ENGLISH)

Dear friends,

This is a very special entry for us, and we hope that it will inspire you to join our effort to recover a healthy golden eagle population in Mexico.

Early this year, our team was busy carrying out field monitoring in the northern state of Chihuahua. With an area roughly half of Spain’s, Chihuahua is home to both large expanses of natural grasslands—one of the most endangered ecosystems in North America—and the highest concentration of the few golden eagle breeding pairs left in Mexico.

We were looking for a suitable nest in which to install this year’s camera. By the end of April, we found a nest that provided relatively safe access while ensuring minimal disturbance to its feathery occupants. The chick, who we nicknamed Torquito, was between six and seven weeks old at the time. During the following three weeks, we were able to record the life of these extraordinary creatures up until the moment Torquito flew from the nest for the first time.

Please watch the video summaries of Torquito’s incredible journey into fledglinghood here

This is the third year in a row that we have successfully installed nest cams. Beyond providing valuable data on eagle behavior, our videos are powerful tools to engage with local audiences about the plight of this iconic endangered species.

Overgrazing and poor grassland management over the past two centuries, in addition to current trends in land-use change and agricultural expansion, has led to significant deterioration of golden eagle habitat in Chihuahua. During the coming months we will carry out more field work to determine the habitat restoration needs of three nesting territories, each of which harbors a golden eagle pair. Moreover, we will implement an environmental education program in local schools to foster a sense of pride in conservation efforts and highlight the importance of environmental stewardship among the younger generations.

Your support helps us save the Mexican golden eagle from extinction. Thank you for joining us on this journey and please consider renewing your contribution to the project.
