Dear friends,
This year brings renewed hope for the golden eagle in Mexico. Last December, we took part in a biannual meeting where experts from academia, civil society and the government discussed the current conservation status of the species; highlighting the challenges that it faces and the steps that need to be followed to address them. We are happy to announce that an updated version of the golden eagle conservation strategy was released during this meeting—this document sets the stage for a nation-wide, coordinated conservation effort and will help guide our activities during the coming years. As part of the new strategy, a specific plan will be drafted for individual nesting territories, as each one of them often faces different types of threats. The idea is to design tailored conservation plans for each territory, working hand-in-hand with the local communities that own the land. In the United States, a similar strategy was used to save the bald eagle from the brink of extinction; increasing its population from only 487 to over nine thousand reproductive couples during a 50-year span.
In the coming months we will keep you posted about the progress we make in implementing the strategy in high-priority golden eagle territories.
The eagle family nestcam is almost back!
Following the success of the previous nesting season where for the second time in Mexico we gave thousands of viewers the opportunity to peek into the secret life of a golden eagle family, this year we will install cameras overlooking two new nests in the northern state of Chihuahua. Just recently we received news that one of the nests already contains two beautiful eggs! If all goes as planned, the cameras should be up and running during the first weeks of April, so expect some really exciting footage very soon! We are firm believers in the idea that to conserve a species you first have to get to know it. In this regard, our nestcams have proved to be very effective tools to garner ever-growing support from the Mexican public.
National Golden Eagle Day
Mexico honored the golden eagle this past February 13 during National Golden Eagle Day. We are happy to share that this was a successful day of awareness-raising: the content we posted on social media was widely shared with a high degree of positive engagement. In addition to the promotion of pre-existing content like our video Embajador de la Naturaleza, our organization participated in several radio and television interviews and spoke about the eagle’s threatened status. Our conservation efforts were also mentioned in several print news sources, including an article in National Geographic Magazine in Spanish, which you can read in the attached PDF!
Wishing you a great first quarter of the year!
