First update from Hutan Harimau (Tiger Forests)

The past three months have been full of productive activities despite extreme instability on the foreign aid front. The current administration's freezes and budget cuts have caused devastating impacts on international conservation projects, including ours. For example, the Rhinoceros and Tiger Conservation Fund (passed by Congress in 1994 and now administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service) was closed midway through our application process, despite earlier announcement for proposal acceptance through February 27, 2025.

Despite these obstacles, Hutan Harimau remains committed! Last month, we met with several government agencies to strengthen collaboration. We also consulted with law enforcement personnel in efforts to curb illegal hunting that is emptying the forests of key tiger prey species, intensifying human-tiger conflicts.

Perhaps most importantly, we were able to mobilize ranger teams in three distinct landscapes: Ulu Masen and Leuser in Aceh province and Batanghari in West Sumatra province. Rangers observed key tiger habitats, placed camera traps, removed 10 snare traps, and served as liaisons with forest-edge communities.

If you’d like to support our tiger-saving patrols, please consider contributing to our campaign. You can also subscribe and follow on our YouTube channel and Instagram page: https://www.youtube.com/@hutanharimau, https://www.instagram.com/hutanharimau_/

Finally, you may consider sending letters to elected officials urging them to reinstate support for international conservation or signing petitions formed by environmental groups.

As long as tigers are threatened by international demands and smuggled to international markets, they will require assistance from international sources.

Thank you and please stay tuned for future updates.
