Save our Trees to the Sea

Every year hundreds of volunteers make their way to the Imperial Highway median on the north border of El Segundo to participate in a community clean up. We call this area Trees to the Sea and it provides so many benefits for our community. The 1.2 mile long stretch houses 370 trees and separates LAX from the rest of the South Bay as a green pollution barrier.

This year's event was more important than ever as our long-time partner Alcoa has agreed to put money directly toward this project. Funds from Alcoa along with your generous donations will ensure that the Trees to the Sea survive and flourish for years to come. Once the volunteers cleaned all the debris from the eastern half of the median our tree managers and volunteers immediately began distributing mulch in the weeks that followed. This will help provide nutrients, prevent weeds, control erosion and most importantly retain water to help sustain them.

Unfortunately, urban trees along busy streets have very short lifespans in comparison to trees in residential areas but trees provide the most benefit for us when they are mature so keeping these trees alive and healthy is our highest priority.

What is coming up for Trees to the Sea?

Arbor Day is right around the corner and volunteers will be working on the western median, clearing it of litter and debris. Then mulch will be put down and irrigation repairs will be made. Trees to the Sea will also receive a much needed round of pruning.
