Save our School: 230 Burundian Pupils Need a Roof

We are so happy to report that - thanks to your help - we have completed the Global Giving Winter challenge by raising more than £2,500 from 50 different donors in November and December 2016, thus officially becoming a Global Giving partner. In fact, your generosity has amounted to a total of £3,737 in donations to save the Murakaza school in the SAB slum of Bujumbura, in Burundi.

Although we are still hoping to reach our objective of £5,000, we have already found a contractor and can't wait to start the works to rehabilitate the school. 

The situation is not easy in Burundi: there is still much insecurity in the country and the rampant inflation and increased cost of living (including food, fuel, etc.) have left many families unable to cover their most basic needs. This is why we are also busy starting our chicken coop, which will allow us to give all our pupils an egg a day. An egg doesn't seem like much but it is an important source of protein for our children who often come to school hungry.

We've also started a basic literacy and numeracy training for mothers. Every Tuesday and Thursday, they learn how to read and on Fridays, they learn basic numeracy skills. This is part of our sewing project which will be able to start as soon as the construction works are over. But in the meantime, we're not losing any time and giving them precious skills, which will be vital for them to run their own business.

In the meantime, we surprised the children with a little New Year's celebration, with donated bread, sweets, balloons and confettis. They responded with songs and dances and so much laughter and smiles.
