Save many Beninese lives with traditional medicine

A call not to let a promising solution wait, while communities cannot afford to.

There is a reality in rural Benin that statistics never fully capture.

It is the reality of a mother walking several kilometers with her sick child. Of an elderly person hesitating to go to a health center because the cost of transportation is already a burden. Of a family that, for lack of means or proximity, turns first to a traditional practitioner for help.

In many rural communities of Couffo, traditional medicine has held an important place in daily life for generations. Traditional practitioners hold precious knowledge of medicinal plants and healing practices passed down from generation to generation.

But this heritage, however valuable, faces a major limitation: the lack of modern tools to better guide observation, screening, care, and, when necessary, referral to appropriate health facilities.

It is precisely at this meeting point between ancestral knowledge, modern medicine, technology, and community health that our project seeks to act.

A solution exists. But it is still waiting for funding.

The NGO, ONG ÉDUCATION ET DÉVELOPPEMENT (ONGED), is working to establish a pilot approach aimed at strengthening the capacities of a rural health center and supporting traditional practitioners in a safer, better-structured approach oriented toward greater collaboration with the health system.

Our ambition is simple but profound:

Not to pit tradition against modernity, but to seek what each can contribute best in service of communities.

The project notably includes the acquisition of analysis equipment planned as part of the project, as well as training and support for the relevant stakeholders.

The goal is not to replace health professionals or to present technology as a miracle solution. Rather, it is to create a pilot framework for screening, referral, awareness-raising, and collaboration, in which local knowledge can be better valued while encouraging safer health practices.

This approach is especially important in areas where populations face geographic remoteness, the cost of travel, a lack of equipment, and difficulty accessing certain specialized services.

Today, we must speak to you with transparency

We have a vision. We have identified the needs. We have worked on the project. We have local stakeholders ready to get involved. We have a community that is waiting.

But we have not yet raised the financial resources needed to move fully from design to implementation.

To date, despite presenting this microproject online, we have not yet received the level of funding expected from online donors.

This situation compels us to share a particularly sincere message with you today:

We do not want this initiative to remain simply a beautiful project on paper.

In our villages, the needs are real and immediate.

Every month that passes without funding means we delay the ability to carry out the planned activities, train the relevant stakeholders, and test this approach within a pilot framework.

Why Couffo? Why now?

Couffo is a region where rural communities possess considerable human, cultural, and traditional wealth.

But this wealth comes with challenges as well.

In some localities, quickly accessing appropriate health services can be a real ordeal: distance, transportation costs, insufficient infrastructure, low household incomes, or reliance on locally available solutions as a first resort.

In this context, traditional practitioners are often the closest point of contact.

They know the families. They know the plants. They know the habits of their community. They are sometimes consulted even before a person goes to a health facility.

Rather than ignoring this reality, we want to build with it.

Our approach therefore consists of promoting awareness, training, referral, and complementarity with health services, while encouraging caution and referral to qualified professionals when the situation requires it.

What your donation will concretely make possible

Your contribution will not simply serve to purchase equipment.

1. Acquire the equipment needed for the project Acquiring the planned equipment is one of the essential conditions for launching our pilot phase.
2. Train and support local stakeholders Equipment alone is not enough. We want to strengthen the capacities of the people who will take part in the project, so that its use and integration into the local system are as responsible and useful as possible.
3. Raise community awareness We want to explain to the population that prevention, screening, prompt referral, and turning to health professionals are essential. We also want to work against certain dangerous practices that can delay necessary medical care.
4. Responsibly promote traditional knowledge Traditional knowledge should neither be dismissed nor idealized. It should be documented, respected, and, whenever possible, studied within a responsible framework. Our ambition is to help create a dialogue between holders of traditional knowledge, community stakeholders, and health professionals.
5. Create a replicable model If the pilot experience delivers the expected results, it can serve as a foundation for other initiatives in rural communities across Benin and, in the longer term, inspire other African regions facing similar challenges.

Behind this project, there are people

When we talk about funding, we are not just talking about numbers.

We are talking about a mother. A child. A farmer. A pregnant woman. An elderly person. A family that does not always know who to turn to when illness strikes.

We are also talking about the men and women in the villages who have devoted their lives to preserving knowledge inherited from their parents and grandparents.

We have learned one thing through our community work:

A good idea only transforms a community when it meets the means to become a reality.

Today, our project stands precisely at that crossroads.

We can keep waiting. Or we can start acting.

The funding we are seeking will allow us to take this decisive step: moving from design to on-the-ground experimentation.
