icddr,b, an international health research organization based in Bangladesh, has served vulnerable people since 1960. Its hospitals treat more than 300,000 patients free of cost through the world's biggest diarrhoeal hospital. More than 60% of the patients are children under five. icddr,b hospitals in Dhaka, and Matlab also serve as a platform for research. It has produced lifesaving innovations such as oral rehydration salt, saving more than 70 million lives globally. Help us to save more lives.
Families from low-income backgrounds often face significant barriers to health and wellness. Bangladesh, being a country with low water quality and hygiene, faces diarrhoeal disease outbreaks each year. Diarrhoeal patients need immediate treatment from dehydration otherwise facing demise. On the other hand, these diseases are mostly prevalent among marginalized people due to unhygienic living conditions. Vulnerable population in Bangladesh lack of access to quality medical services too.
icddr,b is committed to serving vulnerable populations. Its hospitals annually treat around 300,000 patients free of charge, where more than 40% are female and more than 60% are children under five years of age. This project will help icddr,b support thousands of patients to pay for the medical, food, diagnostics, and other support services required to provide world-class treatment. No money is collected from any patient during the service period at icddr,b hospitals.
This project will save more than 3,000 lives in Bangladesh, most of whom can't access high-quality medical services due to a lack of financial support. Our hospitals act as a platform for cutting-edge research and finding low-cost lifesaving solutions like ORS, which are estimated to have saved 70 million lives globally and still counting. The most reputed journal, The Lancet, aptly summed up icddr,b's work as: "Health solutions developed in Bangladesh save lives around the world''.
