Project Report | Jan 12, 2026
Saving Lives at the World's Largest Diarrheal Hospital (icddr,b)

By Naser Azad | Donor Relations Manager

1. Executive Summary

During 2024, icddr,b’s Dhaka Hospital continued to serve as a critical safety net for Bangladesh’s most vulnerable populations. Despite the seasonal spikes in diarrheal cases—which in recent years have reached record highs of over 1,200 admissions per day—our clinical teams maintained a recovery rate of over 99%. Support from GlobalGiving donors has directly funded free life-saving treatments, including Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), intravenous fluids, and nutritional rehabilitation for thousands of children.

2. Key Achievements & Impact Data

  • Patient Volume: Treated approximately 305,125 patients this year, with a significant portion being children under five.

  • Malnutrition Interventions: Successfully implemented the Microbiota-directed Complementary Food (MDCF-2)—recently recognized as one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2025—to treat severely malnourished children.

  • Innovation in Care: Continued the use of low-cost bubble CPAP devices for children with pneumonia, significantly reducing mortality rates compared to standard oxygen therapy.

  • Emergency Response: Maintained 24/7 operations and makeshift field hospitals during peak "cholera seasons" to ensure no patient was turned away.

3. A Story of Hope: [Name's] Recovery

Note for Naser: Use a specific, anonymized story here. For example:

"Two-year-old 'Ayan' arrived at our hospital severely dehydrated and unresponsive. His family, living in a congested urban slum, could not afford private care. Within 24 hours of receiving specialized rehydration and zinc treatment at icddr,b, Ayan was sitting up and smiling. His mother received counseling on WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) practices to prevent future illness. This is the direct result of your generosity."

4. Recent Milestones & Recognition

  • TIME100 Health: Our Executive Director, Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed, was named to the 2025 TIME100 Health list, highlighting the global impact of our clinical and research work.

  • Climate Change & Health: Launched the Centre for Climate-Change and Health (iCCH) to address the rising incidence of waterborne diseases linked to climate-driven flooding in Bangladesh.

5. Financial Transparency: How Your Gift Is Used

Every dollar contributed through GlobalGiving goes toward:

  1. Free Treatment: Medicines, saline, and hospital beds for those living below the poverty line.

  2. Nutritional Support: Specialized therapeutic foods for children with acute malnutrition.

  3. WASH Education: Training for caregivers to break the cycle of infection at home.

6. Future Outlook & Challenges

As we look toward the next quarter, we are focused on addressing the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) within hospital settings and scaling our Pediatric Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) care model. Your continued support is vital as we adapt to these evolving health challenges.
