Tbilisi Heart Screening Sustained- Need to Expand!

By Kiija Manty Miller | Project Leader

Two Nurses Screen Baby for Heart Defects
Two Nurses Screen Baby for Heart Defects

Thanks to your ongoing support, the newborn heart screening program in Tbilisi has now been fully sustained by the Ministry of Health! However, other infants in the country are still in urgent need of this life-saving screening program.  On September 21st, GlobalGiving is sponsoring a bonus matching day for all donations. Matching funds are limited and will be released at 6am EDT and 12pm EDT. We need just $10,000 to expand our program to the Kvemo Kartli region – an area where newborns are especially in need of life-saving heart screening. A donation as small as $10 can help make a world of difference!

To date in Tbilisi, where all newborns are now routinely screened for heart defects, nearly  55,000 babies have been screened. Of those screened, 165 were identified with heart defects  - 35 of those had confirmed critical heart defects. All babies received prompt treatment at the Jo Ann Cardiovascular Center. All have survived thanks to this life-saving program.

The Georgian healthcare community is enthusiastic about the CCHD screening program. Ia Davitaia, MD, PhD, President of the Association of Neonatologists of Georgia says, “The RVF CCHD screening program is vital to ensuring the health of our newborn patients. The program has saved the lives of babies with CCHD who might not have survived without the screening program. ”
