All Newborns in Tbilisi Now Being Screened for Heart Defects - Help Us Expand the Program!

Thanks to your generous support, we have raised $23,411 to help screen newborns in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi for critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs) and ensure that they receive prompt treatment. Since June 2014, this program, which RVF built in partnership with the Georgian Ministry of Health, has screened nearly 31,240 infants for heart defects. Of this total, 25 newborns with CCHDs and 80 with other heart defects have been identified. All babies with confirmed heart defects received immediate emergency treatment free of charge at the Jo Ann Cardiovascular Center in Tbilisi. All of the babies have survived.

For second-time mother Karine, the benefits of our program are very clear: “Screening my baby so soon after birth allowed her to get the emergency life-saving care she needed.” Our screening program caught her daughter Anush’s life-threatening critical heart defect while there was still time to treat it. Without early detection and prompt treatment, Anush may not have survived. Karine explained,

“After a complication-free pregnancy and childbirth, my second child, my little baby girl Anush was born. While breastfeeding Anush for the very first time, I noticed that her lips turned blue and she struggled to latch. Our doctor took a look but didn’t see anything wrong with her. The next day another doctor told me that Anush’s screening results showed possible congenital heart defect. Soon a medical team transferred my baby to a specialized cardio clinic where my baby girl was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Surgery took place just a few days after the screening and Anush is recovering well. Screening my baby so soon after birth allowed her to get the emergency life-saving care she needed.”

With the success of the heart screening program in Tbilisi, demand for the heart screening program in other areas of Georgia has grown. RVF needs to raise $20,000 to expand the program to the Kvemo-Kartli region, where newborns urgently need this screening program. Please consider donating to expand this life-saving program.
