It was the end of the first Yo Soy la Respuesta year, and it was time to evaluate the kids’ learning. We did a small interview and Maikel enthusiastically told us about the day he was out walking with his mother and saw a plastic bag in a lake. He would tell his mother to please help him, to hold him tightly by the arm so that he would get the bag out with a stick; he insisted, there were turtles in the lake and they were going to eat it. He spoke with great emotion, he said the animals felt the same as him and he was interested in helping them, even though that day his mother did not. Seven-year-old Maikel always participated when we visited the Escuela 15 de Agosto in Tirrases, and it was one of the best example of what we achieved with the children.
We were able to generate the interest for them to talk to their parents about the importance of caring for Mother Earth. They sang, they stretched, they breathed, and more importantly, they understood why they did it. The testimonies of the children showed us one more time that Yo Soy la Respuesta project has unparalleled potential. It allows us to communicate contents that would be considered very complex for children but that they demonstrate not only to understand but apply in their lives. We give them the real tools for life, not only to take care of our mother earth but to take care of themselves.
Fundación Gaia greeted this new year participating in the Earth Charter Education Conference of 2019, in where our program was received as one of the examples of the new education based on the transformation of the human being from its essence and through changes in their lifestyle. We also received the wonderful news about reaching the $5000 goal with GlobalGiving. With that help we can guarantee that the project will remain at the minimum necessary during this year and that we are able to continue developing the process to find the additional financing necessary to fulfill our goal.
Being developed within public education, classes with children will start next week, on March. So in these first three months we have been preparing everything necessary to start the school year, to expand the declaration of educational interest one more year, to include a second school in the project, to expand the coverage of our impact to the teachers and to develop a strategy for GlobalGiving. In Escuela Inglaterra we were able to implement our whole curriculum with yoga and meditation on first grade, and this year we get to follow up with the same group but in second grade, this because they didn’t participate in the national three month strike that went down at the end of the year. Also, because of this positive relationship with the Institution, we are applying for the new Educational Interest Decree by the Ministry of Education, centered in this school. This year we will also collaborate with the 15 de Agosto School in Tirrases and the Professional Technical College Uladislao Gómez Solano.
All of these actions translate into a healthier and happier society, starting with our kids.
