Dear Members,
THANK YOU for saving Pickles! Their rescue simply would not have been possible without YOU!
Let me explain.
Pickles is a Blue-fronted Amazon parrot who was recently relinquished to the Parrot Education and Adoption Center. And until a couple weeks ago, Pickles had lived inside of that tiny wrought iron cage, never out, since the 1980s! Their owner had passed away, and a family member was driving a significant distance to check on Pickles every few days. When they reached out to PEAC, our volunteers jumped into action quickly arranging for a foster and veterinary exam.
Since then, Pickles has started experiencing many new things, like vegetables, out-of-cage time, accepting head scritches and exploring new toys. It’s been a slow and steady process, and PEAC's volunteers (especially his foster, Carey, in the picture above,) have been amazed at how brave Pickles has been over these past few weeks!
But none of this could have happened without your donations and support for our parrot adoption and educational programs. Medical care has significantly increased by over 15% just since the beginning of this year. Every single bird that comes into PEAC receives a comprehensive veterinary exam with bloodwork (basic avian panel,) DNA test (if their sex is unconfirmed,) physical exam by an avian specialist vet, psittacosis test and any additional medical care our vets may have a concern about. This now costs about $600-$700 per bird. Many of our incoming birds are older and have additional health issues we treat such as liver damage from poor diets, heart disease or arthritis. Veterinary bills are PEAC’s single largest expense, paid for by donations.
So on GivingTuesday, Pickles and all of PEAC's foster parrots greatly appreciate being the beneficiary of your goodwill. There are so many ways to help! You can follow & share our social media, send nuts & toys, volunteer and cash donations are always welcome to keep our parrots fed and veterinary bills paid. All donations are tax deductible.
Again, let me speak on behalf of all of our volunteers:
THANK YOU for your compassion and kindness and giving birds like Pickles a soft place to land.
Gratefully,
Kelly Flynn, President
Parrot Education and Adoption Center
