Dipa is in school because of you!

By Jonathan Steck | Senior Editor

"I would be married without this scholarship."
"I would be married without this scholarship."

Your scholarship gift is ending a terrible traditions in Bangladesh--child marriage.  But more than that, you’re giving girls like 15-year-old Dipa an education and hope for the future!

Growing up in a rural village in Bangladesh, the fear of child marriage was a dark and frightening reality for Dipa. It had become a generational tradition for the girls in her family to be married off—her mother was married at just 16 and she’d watched her older sister sent away to be a stranger’s wife when she was only 13.

Like so many young girls here, Dipa’s life had become a lottery, and it was terrifying.

But your life-changing gift will now keep a girl like Dipa in school, so she can avoid becoming a child bride.

“Without this scholarship, I would already be married,” says Dipa, happily holding her scholarship. She says this with a full heart of thanks, knowing that you have spared her from what happened to her mother, and her older sister.

Thanks to you, a girl like Dipa can be a child again; playing, learning, and dreaming without fear. What a beautiful image, can you imagine the joy and freedom?

Bangladesh has sadly become known for two things: poverty and child marriage. But with an education, girls like Dipa have a six times lower chance of being forced into child marriage before their 18th birthday.  And an education gives her the best chance of avoiding child marriage.

I hope you know how valuable you are—Dipa would have been married without a scholarship! Your gift tells girls like her that they’re not alone, and that they have the potential to do anything.

Thank you!

Because of you, girls can stay in school.
