This isn't just about 'sunburn'; it is a medical crisis. Without specialized protection, many Nigerians with albinism develop life-threatening skin cancer before they reach the age of 30.
In Nigeria, people with albinism face life-threatening risks from the sun due to a lack of melanin. Most cannot access or afford high-SPF sunscreen, leading to a high rate of Isolation, preventable skin cancer, and early death. Children often miss school to avoid sun exposure. With affordable sun protection and healthcare, these lives can be saved and futures restored.
Iretiola's solution combines immediate physical protection with long-term community education. By providing 50 Sun-Safety Kits, children with albinism receive the sun protection they need to attend school and play safely. At the same time, integrated training sessions for health workers and community leaders will build local capacity to identify early skin lesions and combat stigma, ensuring lasting support and empowerment.
By supporting these 50 children, we're giving them a healthy and happy life. Our goal is to reduce deaths from skin cancer by half in the next five years. And support their families. Healthy children stay in school, participate in social activities, and then grow into confident adults who can start businesses, support their families, and lead their communities.
