People all over the world are keen to volunteer, they even willing to cross the globe looking for places to volunteer. Some of them reach out to us and asked if they can volunteer with us. What could they do? Here at The Learning Farm our students do not only learn how to farm, they also learned other invaluable life skills, such as Personal Growth, Communication, Computer and English. We always have something for any international volunteers to share their skills and friendship with our youth.
At this cycle our English teacher’s volunteer is Henry Winkler. Mr. Winkler, or Henry, as he preffered to be called, is from the Netherland but has been living in Indonesia for quite a while. He said he loves Indonesia and if possible he would reside here permanently. Lets hear what Henry thinks about his role as English teacher at The Learning Farm.
“What a delight to teach this group of youngsters. During the eight hours, divided by 2 groups of twenty students, I may teach them as much English as possible. Although I taught them about the importance of speaking the language, some of them stay a little behind. For them I organized the “gaming class”. One or two hours of games with letters, words and figures. This gives a lot of extra satisfaction, both for me as well as the kids. They learn, they adapt....and they’re happy.
We must realize that they come from variety of backgrounds and some of them know only the basics to read and write and do not have any additional education. Kids who were left alone, kids from very poor families and kids with no parents. Here it doesn’t matter we are all equal and we’re all belonging to the same family. I feel very blessed to be part of this.”
