The Learning Farm is located in Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. On November 21, 2022, Cianjur was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 which caused damage to buildings and many fatalities. The magnitude count is relatively small, but because this was caused by plates moving on land with a depth of 10 km, it caused severe damage.
TLF is about 10 km from the epicenter. The dormitory and office buildings are standing strong, but there are light-damaged parts around our after-harvest room, cracks on the ceiling and walls on the second floor of the office, and the wall of our storage room is damaged. 7 Personal computers used by students to study fell and were damaged.
Seeing that the earthquakes in the past week have continued to occur and Cianjur is indeed located on the Cugenang fault (a new active fault in West Java). What we fear is that this will be a continuous earthquake, mitigating severe earthquakes that could be repeated in the next few years. So, we need to anticipate big earthquakes that will happen in the future. We start mitigation approach with disaster emergency equipment such as emergency tents and generators when the power goes out for a long time.
Everyone has been affected also with local residents with victims of death and injury. And the kindness people around us has been wonderful to see. TLF alumni are trying to raise funds to help the victims of the earthquake and although most of the TLF students come from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds, they cannot just stand by witnessing the suffering of their fellow countrymen. This is the true testament of the 6 values that TLF instilled in our students: integrity, caring, team work, initiative, responsibility and discipline.
